Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about made-to-measure timber, floating shelves, finishes and ordering. If you need advice on a particular project, we're happy to help.

01 / Getting started

Ordering & measurements

Getting the dimensions and specification right.

Can I order timber cut to my exact measurements?

Yes. Our made-to-measure products are designed to be ordered to your required dimensions. Choose your timber and available options on the product page, then enter your measurements.

Can you make an L-shaped desktop?

Yes. L-shaped desktops are one of our specialist products. Explore the desktop range or contact us if your design needs discussing.

Can you make shelves longer than 2400mm?

We can accommodate extra-long shelves for suitable specifications. Contact us with your required length, depth, timber and intended use so we can confirm the options.

02 / Shelving

Shelves & brackets

What is the greatest depth for a floating shelf with metal brackets?

The original guidance recommends a shelf depth of up to approximately 350mm for the metal bracket system. Suitability also depends on shelf length, expected load and wall construction, so please check with us before ordering.

How much weight can the floating metal bracket take?

There is no single safe weight rating for every installation. Capacity depends on the wall, fixings, bracket arrangement and shelf dimensions. The original site advised that the brackets themselves are heavy duty, but wall suitability is critical.

How does the metal bracket system work?

A metal bracket is fixed securely to the wall. The shelf is machined to fit over the bracket, concealing the support once installed. Fixings must be suitable for the wall and expected load.

Which wood is best for painted shelves?

Beech or tulipwood are often good choices for painted shelving. If you would rather show the natural grain, Ash is an attractive alternative.

How do the alcove battens work?

Channels are machined into the sides and rear of the shelf. Timber battens are fixed to the alcove walls, allowing the shelf to slide into place over them. The shelf can then be secured as appropriate.

How does a Bracket A shelf work?

The original system uses a bracket attached to the wall and matching recesses machined into the shelf. Once fitted, the shelf conceals the bracket. Installation details and suitable fixings depend on the wall construction.

03 / Solid wood surfaces

Table tops & worktops

What is the difference between lacquer and an oil finish?

Lacquer creates a protective surface coating and can be a practical option for heavily used tables. Oil penetrates and enhances the natural appearance of the timber but generally requires more regular maintenance. The best choice depends on how the surface will be used.

Which timber should I choose for a painted table top?

Beech and tulipwood are suitable options where the wood grain will be covered. Ash is worth considering if you want a more pronounced grain texture to remain visible.

04 / Materials

Choosing your timber

What is the difference between Oak, Ash and Walnut?

Oak is valued for its durability and distinctive grain. Ash is generally lighter in colour with a prominent grain pattern. American Black Walnut offers darker brown tones and a rich natural appearance. See our wood types guide for more information.

Do different timber boards vary in colour and grain?

Yes. Natural timber varies from board to board in colour, grain and character. Product photographs should be treated as a guide rather than an exact colour match.

05 / Protection & care

Finishes & treatments

Which finish is best for a frequently used table?

A suitable hard-wearing lacquer may be preferable for a busy table. Oils can offer a natural look and may be easier to refresh locally, but typically need periodic care. We can advise based on your timber and intended use.

Will a finish change the colour of the wood?

Yes. Oils and lacquers can alter the appearance of timber, sometimes deepening its natural colour. Samples are the best way to judge the finished appearance.

06 / Your order
